Daily Pokémon Discussion: Whiscash

Main Post:

Today's Daily Discussion Pokémon is Whiscash! My favorite part of this sub is in-game playthrough discussion and discussion about using pokemon on playthrough teams so that's what I plan to focus on, but feel free to discuss other aspects of Whiscash such as its design, battling vs this pokemon, battle frontier, competitive, etc.

Barboach is a water/ground pokemon that can be fished up with the good rod on various routes and caves. You can get it anywhere between levels 10 and 25 so shoot for a stronger one, it gets mud bomb at 14 and water pulse at 22. It'll be relying on those until evolving into Whiscash at level 30 and getting surf via hm not long after. You can give it the earthquake tm immediately or wait until 39 (mud bomb is fine until then) for it to free up the tm. Depending on nature, waterfall may end up preferable to surf, but aqua tail missing generally is undesirable. beyond that it gets ice beam, blizzard, fissure, amnesia, rain dance, toxic, stone edge, and rock slide.

Whiscash is overshadowed a bit by Gastrodon. All the desirable traits except recover access and early availability are still there, including near-perfect ice ground coverage perfected by strong and useful water stab, its bulk and defensive typing are good and great, it competently does everything you'd expect. Whiscash is the most balanced defensively and offensively of the 3, with near equal atk def spa and spdef. It's also way faster than Gastrodon and Quagsire but still pretty slow. Its abilities are both pretty useless and it joins later than Gastrodon and around the same time as Quagsire. Water and ground typing is solid for all gyms it's around for except candice and wake, and great vs the entire e4 and Cynthia. Whiscash is a very easy answer to volkner, Bertha, and flint, and does well vs Cynthia's Garchomp and Lucario. Nothing really walls ice beam and its 2 stabs and toxic is a good way for it to kill stuff too. It's also the only mon in the sinnoh Dex that gets the hilarious but generally unnecessary and unreliable fissure. its middling stats and useless abilities are real disadvantages but imo Whiscash is a decent and perhaps underrated playthrough pokemon.

My Whiscash experience was back in 2013, I ran the exact 3 attacks I'd run now in water stab (waterfall for this one,) ice beam, earthquake, and the 4th move was amnesia bc i gave toxic to someone else. Amnesia isn't that great without healing support and since you need items for that you might as well cut out the defense boosting part if you're using items anyways. Stone edge is always nice to pair with earthquake too, but not mandatory since you have Ice and water. Blizzard can be an ice beam replacement if your Whiscash has bad spa but its low pp and accuracy are undesirable. My Whiscash was part of a pretty bulky balance team and was an essential part of my defensive core! I even used specs Lucario on that team, a mon i love to shit on on this sub, and it did pretty well with the support of my 4 fat ass walls. I might start mentioning Whiscash in "what are underrated pokemon to playthrough with" posts here. It's also a mon my dad used in his playthrough of Pearl when i was younger and we played mons together so i associate it with that!

What do you think of Whiscash? Have you used one on your team? How did you utilize it? How much did it contribute? What are some memories or experiences you have with Whiscash?

Top Comment: There’s never any Whiscash threads so I’ll seize my opportunity. Amazing gen 3 back sprite and shiny

[Theme Talk] Whiscash

Main Post:

Hello everyone!

Welcome to this week's edition of Rebuild Tuesday, a weekly event we're doing along with our Discord!

This week's Pokémon is Whiscash!

#0340 Whiscash (Japanese ナマズン Namazun)

Whiskers Pokémon

Whiscash is a dark blue, catfish-like Pokémon with a yellow underbelly. It has a cavernous mouth with light blue lips that have short, thin whiskers growing from the lower lips.

Whiscash's Base Stats:

  • HP: 110
  • Attack: 78
  • Defense: 73
  • Sp. Attack: 76
  • Sp. Defense: 71
  • Speed: 60

Introduction:

Whaddup nerds? Welcome back to Rebuild Tuesday! This week we are going to be looking at a very goofy fella: Whiscash!

This pokemon has a pretty pitiful stat spread of 110/78/73/76/71/60 and a poor move pool. It's no wonder this mon is in SwSh ZU. It was in UU back in Diamond and Pearl and has slowly fallen to unviability since.

The ability Anticipation tells the user if the mon it is facing has a move capable of OHKO-ing it, Hydration cures non-volatile status conditions if rain is active and Oblivious provides immunity to taunt and infatuation.

Overall the abilities aren’t the worst but leave much to be desired. SwSh added liquidation to Whiscash’s arsenal but it hasn’t helped it to escape PU.

How would you change Whiscash so that it can become viable despite the aforementioned weaknesses? Does terastallizing improve the viability of Whiscash? How would you rebuild Whiscash to be viable in either SV given DLC or SwSH where it is currently available? Happy rebuilding!

How viable do you trainers think Whiscash is? Is there anything else you think it needs in order to be a good competitive Pokémon (e.g. new moves, stats, abilities or typings)? What is its most optimal set?

Top Comment: I think, primarily because of its typing, it's important that we figure out what Whiscash is not before we determine what role it should have. The other Water/Ground types include: Quagsire - primarily focused on stopping boosting in the higher tiers. No real overlap with Whiscash there, though otherwise their bulk roles overlap. Swampert - Physical Attacker. Again, no real overlap here. Gastodon - Special wall, especially when abusing Storm Drain as a pivot. This Pokemon has the largest overlap with Whiscash currently. Their BSTs are only 7 stats apart with only minor overall differences aside from maybe Speed (Gastodon's 39 vs. Whiscash's 60), possibly allowing Gastodon to work in Trick Room, but leaving Whiscash with a painfully middling speed stat. Seimitoad - Again pretty similar to Whiscash, though it's a bit better in every stat except for HP (Seimitoad's 105 vs. Whiscash's 110). It uses Water Absorb to come in and pivot, similarly to Gastrodon. I think the obvious route to go here is to lean more into Whiscash's strengths, namely it's bulk. Unfortunately, that role is already filled by multiple other 'mons, which makes it less appealing as a rebuild option. Given everything above, I think Whiscash could be specced into a support Pokemon given the right support. We could hem and haw over stat and ability overhauls, and which I think that would help, I don't think it would solve the problem without a complete rework of the Pokemon. (Though something like Thick Fat could be interesting) Whiscash is the only Pokemon of the Water/Ground types to get Dragon Dance, so giving Whiscash Baton Pass (which none of these Pokemon currently learn) might give it a niche that isn't currently filled. This might also allow it to function as a lead Pokemon with its current access to Spikes/Stealth Rock. Maybe have it learn Swords Dance or Belly Drum too if you wanna go crazy. Making Whiscash a moderately bulky Pokemon that serves a role passing buffs would definitely help it stand out from the competition.

Whiscash

Main Post:

Just caught myself a crazy 0/14/14 shadow Barboach and idk whether it is useful for great league pvp or I should purify it?

Top Comment: Good IV shadows are way more rare than good IV non shadows. Whiscash doesn't need Return as a charge move, so keep this one a shadow and use another for the non shadow whiscash. Even if you currently don't have a non shadow, chances are you catch one soon. The shadow is just to rare not to keep

Whiscash move set and stat distribution?

Main Post:

Is it worth to run Water Pulse to threaten things like Steelix, Sudowoodo and Gliscor?

Is he a good lead?

Top Comment: Mud Shot, Mud Bomb and Blizzard. If you want water go for marshtomp with surf. I'll get back to you on best IVs

Whiscash - Good contender for the Great League?

Main Post:

Is “Mud Bomb” any good? Blizzard covers its double grass weakness, too.

Top Comment:

IMO it's at least worth using, but I haven't faced a grass type with it yet and I'm not sure you could charge a Blizzard before getting Vine Whipped to death.

Whiscash Moveset

Main Post:

I’ve searched on this subreddit for a while and can’t seem to find anyone that has listed what is the best move set to use for Whiscash.

If anyone could help me out, I’d greatly appreciate it.

This is a conspiracy more insidious than any previously discovered within Nintendo...

Main Post:

I am convinced that Barboach and Whiscash are related to Wario! Why else would Barboach have a squiggly mustache on its side, or Whiscash have a W on its forehead?? (And don't tell me it has a W because its name is Whiscash. Its Japanese name is Namazun!) All 3 also are big eaters, and not to mention kinda weird! Nintendo and Pokemon have been plotting this secret connection for over 10 years, but the truth has been exposed!

Top Comment: The bigger conspiracy here is Wario’s hairline

Which whiscash is better?

Main Post:

I have

100iv whiscash at 1482cp at level 25

4/5/9 whiscash at 1482cp at level 28(A/D/Hp)

Which do I bring to my tournament tomorrow?

Top Comment:

The 4/5/9 Whiscash has stats of 109/103/177 (Atk/Def/HP)

The perfect Whiscash has stats of 110/104/171.

The lower IV one is better.

Good IV Whiscash that can go to level 26 or bad one that can go to 29 for Great League?

Main Post:

70% with a 13 in attack vs a 22% with 0/9/3

Top Comment:

You can use calcy iv to see the stats at those levels. Scan the first one and then hit the yellow details button. Write down the values. Then scan the second and compare. In my experience they will be different but one won't necessarily be better and in fact you probably wouldn't notice a difference. My advice is to go for the one that costs less dust.

Counter to Whiscash Mudshot Mudbomb blizzard

Main Post:

Any pocket pick counters to a mudshot mudbomb blizzard Whiscash other than a grass type with Frenzy Plant? Or will frenzy plant be enough to kill the before he gets a blizzard of? Thanks!

Top Comment: Leaf Blade users. It's in the cheapest category of the moves and yet it hits like a truck. You'll be able to fire off at least double the charge moves as Whiscash, which puts you in a favorable position shields-wise.
